Hi guys, I've been lurking for a while admiring your wonderful work and using it as inspiration.
However, I've found myself in a pickle!

I would really like to make my boyfriend something for the holidays.
I started to learn to crochet about a month ago and got a little hopeful and thought I could make him a scarf....however it turns out I'm a really terrible crochet-er.

I want to make him something...like a blanket?
Something that involves sewing--because I can actually do that.

Is this hard to do?
I've heard of "cut and tie" blankets but after looking around for them I can't seem to find them anywhere.

So basically my question is: is it hard to make a nice looking blanket?
I'm really only experienced in sewing tops and things like that, and I've only been sewing for about a year and a half.

Maybe even a pillow...

Hints/tips/suggestions/places to point me to?

i made my boyfriend a blanket for his birthday. simple but time consuming.

we were bored at wal-mart one night, so we split up in the fabric section and picked out our favorite fabrics, then met back in the middle to compare. i made one side of it my favorite, and one side his favorite, with a thin layer of batting in between. i sewed diagonal lines across it, to "hold it together" and make it more quilt-like than sheet-like. oh, and baby blanket ribbon edging around the edges. i made it long, but not any wider than the material, like 45" .. so it's basically a one (or two, smashed together) person blanket.

good luck!

Find a t-shirt with a cool design or logo or his favourite band or whatever on it. Stuff it (really well) and sew it up and voila! An easy gift that your boyfriend should love!

I made my boyfriend a no-sew fleece blanket for Christmas with his initials embroidered on it as to make it more personal. All you do is get 2 pieces of fleece, cut them in half, and cut strips then tie them together. It's SO easy, and it looks really nice. Here's a link:

the cut and tie blankets? the fleece ones? don't buy it in a package.. it is ridiculously more expensive... two pieces of fabric is DEFINITELY the way to go - more selection that way too!

and depending on how tall he is or what you want the blanket for.... you might want to go a little bitter - -for a general idea of size - a twin bed is JUST over 2 yards... i usually give that to customers as a reference to size b/c sometimes, seeing it in the store.. it seems a lot different.

hehehe, and the yankee fleece in the picture? i made my boyfriend a pillow out of it O:-)

I made two of these, one from a kit, and one from my own selection, and the kit one was incredibly small..and mine is big and cozzy..yay. They are incredibly easy to make. 'Tis the way to go.

My Dad is also a Yankees fan. We actually went to a Yankees vs. A's game here in Oakland.

When JoAnn Fabrics had a sale last year, fleece (solid, plain colors) was less than $3 a yard, we picked up enough that everyone in my family had a set of two colors and we sat around making the blankets (teaming up, aaah, family cooperation) making them on Christmas night- it was a lot of fun, but word of advice- electric scissors make it sooooo much easier! Two yards makes a nice size blanket (2 yds each side). Matching pillows are a nice touch too- though I prefer sew those (as pillowcases), I don't like the fringes around my face.
