more knifty knitter goodness

7:57 pm - 12/05/2005
I wanted to make this hat even tho I live in Mississippi, and I doubt it'd be that cold to get any real wear out of it LOL but I also just wanted to see if I could make it on my knifty knitter..

The scarf parts are 4 feet long.. I made it by starting with the scarf ends (using two strands of yarn so it's thicker.. you can probably only use one strand if it's a chunky yarn).. I made one 4 ft scarf using the first 13 pegs on the green knifty knitter. Then I left a long string and cut it. I then made a scarf on the last 13 pegs (so each side of the scarf is side by side. once each side is the same length I begin to just knit the middle 26 pegs for about 3 inches. I then knit around the whole knifty knitter for 3 full rows.. I make a tiny brim for just the front section of the hat. Then continue knitting the hat like normal. knit for about 7.5 inches. finish the hat like normal and make a pom pom and attach it to the top of the hat! :) voila! It took me 3 evenings to make this.. about maybe 8-10 hrs total I guess... but I was also distracted by watching tv.. so it's probably a little less.. It was super easy to make.. and I think it came out pretty well.

I like! Nice blue and black combo. :)
homicideisgood 6th-Dec-2005 03:08 am (UTC)
holy shits, thanks so much! i knew there was a way to make hats with flaps on the KK!
soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 03:33 am (UTC)
yea you can prob make it flaps by just starting the longer bits closer to where the ears would be.. I'd probably make a mini brim like on the hat part for the ends of the ear flap part so it's not as loose and so it wont curl up.

You're a genius. Not to mention adorable. But mainly genius.

jadey_mcshadey 6th-Dec-2005 03:52 am (UTC)
I love them. How long would you say the hat took you?
soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 03:56 am (UTC)
the hat and scarf are all one peice... but I can usually make a regular adult hat in about an hour or 2.. I can make a baby hat in like 30 to 1 hr.
jadey_mcshadey 6th-Dec-2005 03:59 am (UTC)
haha, I should read the words as well as look at the pretty pictures! Thnaks!
badluckcity 6th-Dec-2005 04:55 am (UTC)

soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 12:55 pm (UTC)
thanks
oh_justwait 6th-Dec-2005 06:54 am (UTC)
that is so cute. i'm gonna have to try that, if i can figure out how to use my damn knifty knitter. its always too tight.
(holla for that ms. i'm from south alabama!)
soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 12:56 pm (UTC)
you are probably e-wrapping too tightly. I was doing that when I first started.. wrap very loosly and it should be easier.
spiceycreations 6th-Dec-2005 07:28 am (UTC)
That's an awesome hat and scarf set!
soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 12:54 pm (UTC)

lemonglitz 6th-Dec-2005 10:06 am (UTC)

soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 12:56 pm (UTC)

lepamplemousse 6th-Dec-2005 02:07 pm (UTC)
So cute!
soadchik 6th-Dec-2005 10:55 pm (UTC)
I explained it in my post. I didnt use a pattern.. I just made it from the picture on that website and by roughly measuring how big i should make the part on the back and how big I should make the hat. it was all an experiment to just see if I could make a hat with scarf parts attached to it on a knifty knitter... and it worked! :)
flashbackk__ 7th-Dec-2005 02:07 am (UTC)
thats insane!!!! i want to do that sooo bad!

i dont really understand your directions. do you know of a tutorial anywhere? or could you maybe explain it a little more in detail to me? all i know how to make with the knifty knitters is just going around and around....
soadchik 7th-Dec-2005 02:59 am (UTC)
i made it by just experimenting.. so there's no tutorial out there..

first you need to learn how to make a scarf on a knifty knitter.. just e-wrap like you would to make a hat, but only wrap the number of pegs you want to be the width of the scarf.. then e-wrap back to the first peg... then pull the loops over the pegs that are wrapped twice.. continue.

and also how to make a brim... there's tutorials on the basics here:
http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/how-to-loom-knit.html
http://decoraccentsinc.com/knitting_loom_instructions.html

I'd highly suggest getting the $1 book that they sell for knifty knitter, b/c that's how I learned this and it has clear directions with pictures on how to do all of these things.. I've only had my knifty knitter for like 2 weeks, so i'm in no way an expert.. but that little $1 book answers pretty much all the questions i've seen on here about doing things on the knifty knitter...

anyhoo.. once you learn how to do flat pieces and how to make a brim.. then my directions should be easy.
walrusofthesea 7th-Dec-2005 09:36 am (UTC)
That's very clever!
xandara 9th-Dec-2005 09:26 pm (UTC)
Pretty! And it matches your eyeshadow! *two thumbs up*
ritterisgod911 8th-Jan-2006 09:35 pm (UTC)
so did you make 2 seperate scarves and attach it to the hat? that is the part i'm not understanding.
soadchik 8th-Jan-2006 09:41 pm (UTC)
pretty much.. but I didnt take the scarves off of the hat. I started with the scarves and left them on the KK so when I started making the hat, it automatically incorporated the scarves into the hat. you have to know how to make flat scarves on the KK before you can do this... tube scarves will not work.
ritterisgod911 8th-Jan-2006 09:43 pm (UTC)
ah yes, i think i understand now. great hat!
fragglefemme 6th-Feb-2006 08:04 pm (UTC)
Really wonderful project :) It's next on my list to try after I finish the shrug I'm making right now....

Kudos!
