hey, i taught myself how to knit in the round. i have been making wristbands. i really want to make some with stars on them but i couldnt figure out how to write the patterns and i am hopeless when it comes to finding knitting info online. can anyone explain patterning in the round? thanks in advance.

Wristbands, eh? That's a good idea. I haven't worked up to things like stars in the round, unfortunately, so I can't help you there. But do you mind if I ask if you have a patten for wrist bands?

I imagine it's just casting on a certain number of stitches and taking it from there....?

Thanks!

sure, i used size fives and worstesd weight. i have tiny wrists so i think i did about 26 stiches. really, you just mess around until you get what you want. it only takes about 45 minutes to make one with two colors!

draw the complete piece on checkered paper where one square is one "stitch". then fill in where the stars will be.
when you start knitting, mark the end/beginning with a different colored piece of yarn and then just take it from there.
knitting with circular needles or double pointed needles is just like knitting "regulary" when it comes to this.

i tried that and it totally did not work. i got like, an ameoba. maybe i should learn the proper way of doing things instead of teaching myself "what works." :)
thanks though!

Ok.. that graph thing.. that's cool IF you take into account the front and back of the work are done in front. SO... make sure you account for the back of your work as well (WHICH IS IN THE FRONT) heheh... I'm sure that made no sense. Remember to USE ROW MARKERS! You may think you're at the beginning of a row, but likely you're not which is why you got your amoeba. Also, stars are a bitch to do on a small design. You're going to need to try to knit it flat first to figure out the pattern.

Go to the library... find some patterns either in the books or magazine section that show the graphs for patterns. You may luck out with a star pattern.

Good luck!

d'oh! that must be it, i didnt mark the rows. i tried to just count stitches [the second time i tried], and that came out a little better, so third times a charm we hope!
