My first purse!

8:00 pm - 05/23/2005
Made from a pair of old overalls that my mom was just going to *throw away*. XD Well, can't have that when a craftgirl is on the loose!

It's hand stitched and I messed up a little on the lining (shh! don't tell!), but it came out really well for a first try.

Three pockets, one with a zip closure. The shoulder straps are now the purse straps. :) I KNEW I had to do that. Was my inspiration, actually.

One pocket here, cut from the back of the overalls. Simple.

Red flannel lining from a shirt that was also about to be trashed. :) Waste not...

So what do you think? Cute? Stupid? Sellable? I sure hope so. ~_^ A friend of mine is considering buying it, I'm going to show it to her tomorrow, see what she thinks.

Also, so I don't clog posts:

I just got a huge amount of stamps from someone - they're from everwhere from the US to Cuba to Australia to the Netherlands. Anyone have any ideas for me, other than the stamp bracelets I've made?

i've got an idea for the stamps.
SEND ME SOME!
THOSE ARE SO COOL!
lyssian 24th-May-2005 02:28 am (UTC)
Nope, sorry, these are all mine. ^^; I just got them, I can't bring myself to get rid of them just yet. haha

that overall bag is such a good idea!
I have a pair of black courdory overalls and I just may have to do that.
(I was thinking they'd make a spoffy dress, but I woudln't really be able to pull that off :P and I'm too lazy to sell stuff)
winterknight 24th-May-2005 01:18 am (UTC)
The bag is great. :)

How about using the stamps inside some clear vinyl or that sticky covering stuff I forget the name of and use them to make a wallet or a purse? A little wallet to carry a pen set or something would be cute.

Hm... I saw a tutorial for a packing tape wallet a while ago, maybe I can put the stamps into the tape covering... Good idea! ::runs to find the tute::
ubasquash Packing tape sucks24th-May-2005 10:03 pm (UTC)
I am a tape-wallet fiend...I've made them out of duct tape, packing tape, gaff tape...etc. Gaff tape is the best because it's made to hold down EVERYTHING in theater, plus it comes in white. But I believe you are looking for a tape that is clear, so I'd say stay away from packing tape (because it doesn't last very long on a wallet), and use clear duct tape (they do make it!). Clear duct tape still has those thread lines, but I think the effect of a stamp behind the thread wouldn't look bad at all, plus you know you're making a more quality wallet with the durablility of duct tape.

Ooh, Gaffe tape... ::wishes she'd stolen some of it from the theatre cabinets before the end of the season instead of green spike tape:: Oh well. There's always next year. ~_^

Also (Sorry!), if you soak the stamps in water, they come right of of the paper they're attached to. And the quickest way to dry them is to set them "sticky side up" on paper towels in the oven (turned off of course). Just thought that'd help, plus without the thick envelope paper attached to the back, more can be accomplished!
lyssian 26th-May-2005 01:13 am (UTC)
Thanks! I'd never really thought to cut off the backing, to be honest. XD I've just been cutting away the rough edges.

Yay! ^_^

My idea for the stamps? I'd keep them like they are, maybe get a few more and cover the desk...and then lay a plastic sheet over them. :)
youre_invisible 24th-May-2005 04:30 am (UTC)
i agree.
actually, i thought that's how they were..
pushups_indrag 24th-May-2005 04:39 am (UTC)
same here, and i thought it looked really good
tuckspuddn 24th-May-2005 04:46 am (UTC)
Me too, but I figured I'd point out the obvious, just in case. :)
lyssian 24th-May-2005 09:21 pm (UTC)
Oh, that's a really good idea... I'm getting a crappy little desk soon for a new computer (well, old computer, but we got a new one so the old one goes into my room. ^^), and I've been trying to think of how to decorate. That'd be a fantastic idea, to just get a plastic sheet to put over them...

Thanks! ::ideas a'brewin::

My best friend's parents collected money from all of their traveling and have it on those little round end tables, and then put the glass over top. I thought it was a neat way to display things :)

Any home improvement center should have plexiglass...call around and ask :)
dismalqueen I love the purse24th-May-2005 03:03 pm (UTC)
That's so cute...great idea...I want one now.
ex_nopants511 24th-May-2005 09:51 pm (UTC)
I like the purse, it's a cute idea, but I bet it would be really hard to carry because the straps are going the wrong way, and it won't lay quite right. Those kind of things bug me :)
lyssian 26th-May-2005 01:10 am (UTC)
Don't I know it. :/ That's why I'm planning to sell it and not use it myself. XDD

What my sister suggested as an alternative is to loop the straps around a belt you're wearing and wear it like a little side pack. Which would make more sense, I suppose. :)
lyricospinto 26th-May-2005 04:04 am (UTC)
I totally may have to steal the overalls idea!!

Soooo cute!

As for the stamps, maybe use them to decorate the boarder of a mirror, or corkboard, or maybe some sort of keepsake box?
