sycamorechick 28th-Aug-2004 09:26 am (UTC)
Did you do all of this with a sewing machine?
wasted_sympathy 28th-Aug-2004 05:01 pm (UTC)
Yep, except for sewing on the buttons.
sycamorechick 28th-Aug-2004 05:26 pm (UTC)
cool. i haven't used a sewing machine since the 8th grade
cordelia_sue 28th-Aug-2004 12:35 pm (UTC)

rawiscorrri 28th-Aug-2004 03:18 pm (UTC)
that is awesome, thank you so much. betcha can't guess where i'm going tonight?

psst. joanns.
about how many yards of each fabric did you use?
wasted_sympathy 28th-Aug-2004 05:04 pm (UTC)
You're very welcome. :)

I bought a yard of the robot fabric and probably used half or a bit more of that. The red was just extra fabric that I had, but I think a yard would do fine.
manikgrl 28th-Aug-2004 08:24 pm (UTC)
This bag is awesome I added this to my own memory list so I can one day make this. I am a BAG WHORE!!! Thank you thank you for this tutorial!!!
wasted_sympathy 28th-Aug-2004 08:48 pm (UTC)
Oh, haha, me too! I love love love purses. I was thinking of making another of these, just in a different color and with a different liner. I'm obsessed with purses. Your very welcome for the tutorial, make sure to post pictures once you make it. :)
paper_scissors Robot gem29th-Aug-2004 03:15 pm (UTC)
At this site rippednylons they have robot necklace little things (cant find right words) and thought you could get one of those, or maybe it will give you inspiration to make your own. :P
wasted_sympathy Re: Robot gem29th-Aug-2004 09:12 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I'll have to try to make one myself, I know I have clay around somewhere.
chemicalkisses 3rd-Sep-2004 08:38 am (UTC)
this is an awesome purse and thanks for making a tutorial for us! i'm looking forward to trying it out.
your purse seems to be about the size i want, is there any way you could include what your measurements were for your fabric that you cut out and what size zipper you used? i'm not always the greatest at guestimating what size to make things, and i'm sure this information will be useful to others wanting to make the purse as well. thanks!
wasted_sympathy 4th-Sep-2004 04:53 pm (UTC)
Your welcome. The zipper was a 9" I believe, and the main part is the same size as a sheet of paper. And the bottom/sides is about 5 inches wide and the length is just to fit around the main parts with some extra just in case, the straps...3. And the other pieces were just made to fit to that. And that's before it's sewn so there's plenty of space to make it smaller. I hope that helped.
quichedujour 25th-Feb-2005 09:26 am (UTC)
ahah so I love the tutorial & i'm totally trying it tomorrow (yeah I realize this comment is forever after the post). but um, i was wondering if you could clarify about the size of #3. Like what you mean by the edges. thankyouu<3
wasted_sympathy 25th-Feb-2005 08:38 pm (UTC)
See #4? When you're sewing the long part on? You just have to imagine that it's 3-D, haha. You want the long part to be able to go around #1, or the main part. If you're still unsure, just have a long piece that you know you'll have extra with still and cut the excess off once it's sewn on. Sorry, I'm not good at explaining stuff. :\
quichedujour 26th-Feb-2005 01:18 am (UTC)
thanks! I gettt it. horray
weirdo_jr 10th-Apr-2005 12:15 am (UTC)

Hi, sorry it's taken me forever to reply. That journal was deleted so I don't check this stuff anymore. Umm, I don't know the exact measurements, becase I didn't measure anything when I made it, but I can give you approximates.

The main pieces were the same size as a normal piece of paper, I ended up cutting off 2 or 3 inches of that though. The bottom and sides are like 5 inches wide. And the length is just the same as the main pieces. You can just lay those pieces down next to where they're gonna be sewn and then cut it. The straps were about 3 inches wide and you just make those however long you want them to be. And all the other pieces I just made to fit the rest. I'm sorry I don't have the exact measurements for you. :[
poetik__tragedy 11th-Aug-2005 12:29 am (UTC)
this is REALLY old (a year pretty much) and i was just wondering if you could tell me the dimensions of all the pieces? this is great but with my ocs i demand everything it perfect and i'd love the sizes. sorry for rambling.
giraffecrafts 11th-Aug-2005 05:29 pm (UTC)
I don't have the exact dimensions, because I don't measure stuff when I sew...but I can tell you approximates. I hope that's ok.

main piece - same size as a piece of paper

bottom and side piece - 5 inches wide, and you can just lay it down next to where it'll be sewn to see how long it has to be

straps - 3 inches wide, and however long you want them

For the rest of the pieces I just made them to fit the main pieces. The button straps would be the same width as the straps, and the front pocket piece, just make that longer than the main piece so they won't be flat pockets.

Hi :) I just found this tutorial and really want to try it out, but I was wondering, because the tutorial doesn't mention it, how you made sure the bag kept it's shape. What do you use to make it look sturdy instead of flimsy? (which often happens when i make bags and it's driving me nuts!).

Thanks :)
giraffecrafts 24th-Apr-2006 06:43 pm (UTC)
Actually, I didn't use anything to stiffen it up! I hate flimsy bags too, but have yet to find a good way to keep their shape. I think it holds up pretty well just because the outside fabric is kinda sturdy itself. So I just use thick fabric and that takes care of it! :)
magicalicons 25th-Apr-2006 07:19 am (UTC)
Thanks for replying back so quickly. I'm learning the difficult (and expensive way) that I need to put something into my finished projects (which I'll have to unstitch eventually!), that they need something inside them to make them sturdier. You're right about the thicker fabric, it does help.

I also read on a message board that some people use plastic canvas or plastic tapestry canvas to help stabilise the base of the bag. Not sure how they actually use it but I think I'll have to go get some and experiment.

Thanks for your help. I'm saving your pattern and definitely going to attempt that bag when I have more time :)

I love the tutorial, and I'm definately trying it out next weekend, but someone should make a version of this with real pictures, in stead of drawings to help people out....MAYBE I WILL!??!?!

Is there anyway you could put Make This Bag for Dummies? hehe.
But really, it's wicked and I'd love to make one.
