Matchbox Jewelry or Whatever Box Tutorial

Ok, you asked for it and I’ll try my best to explain how I put this together.

1. After removing the matches from the inside drawers, sand down the tops so they will slide in and out easily. Paint them, inside and out. When the paint dries punch a tiny hole in front and insert scrapbooking brads for the pull handles or you could use beads.

2. Glue the matchboxes together 2 across and 5 high. With the drawers removed, paint the edges of the front only.
3. Measure the 2 sides and back and cut lightweight cardboard in those dimensions. I used a cereal box for this. Glue on the sides and back making sure the drawers are not going to get glued on to the back. (I almost made this major mistake when I glued the back on.)
4. Measure the top and bottom of the matchboxes and cut out 2 pieces of regular cardboard about 1/8“ larger on all sides.
5. Next, cut out 2 pieces of paper for the top and bottom, roughly ½ “ larger on both sides. I used Royal Coat Decoupage Finish for the rest of the gluing. Take one piece of cardboard and center it on the paper and lightly glue it down. Starting at the corners, fold in at a 90-degree angle and then fold down the other 4 sides and glue or tape them in place. Decoupage the outside of this. Do the same with the other piece of cardboard and paper.

6. Measure around the 2 sides and back of the matchboxes and add ½ “ to the length. Fold each outside edge in ¼”. This will give the front a more finished look.
7. Using Royal Coat Decoupage, glue this strip of paper onto the matchboxes and decoupage the outside. Use as many coats as you want.
8. Glue the top and bottom pieces onto the matchboxes and glue the marbles on for the feet with regular tacky glue.
9. If the drawers seem a little tight, rub them with waxed paper and they’ll slide in and out much easier.
10. Voila! You’re done!
