i want to make something for my section in band for christmas. there are eight of us, not including me. four girls and four boys. my original idea was to frame a picture that i took of all us minus myself (because i would be taking the picture) in frames i decorated. it would only have cost $1 for the extra 8 sheets of photo paper, but then i remembered that frames aren't the cheap. i could just do that for just my section leader because she's a senior and i don't think the guys would like pictures anyway.

any ideas about what i could do for the others? i might just forget about the whole thing because one of them and i don't get along and another isn't really close with the rest of us. i could just not give them anything, but that would be kind of mean.

any (cheap) ideas would be wonderful.

Making frames from boxboard, and acetate sheets for in front, decorated with paint and glued-on bits of relevant things (maybe old music sheets from somewhere? check with your instructor...) would be inexpensive.

I like your idea. To me, it'd be saying that you treasure this memory, this time where your lives happen to meet, and are honouring it by sharing this photo. The one who tends to stay apart might feel unwanted, the guys' parents might love the picture, etc. Go for it. :)

I was going to mention that. ^_^ Sometimes little things like this can bring people together. God knows how many times in Drama Club just little stupid things like pitching in for pizza would let us just have time to bond. Gifts last, and you can treasure that forever. ^_^

hey, this is an old post, but i thought i may ask anyway...

i was going to make a new post about DIY framing, but found your suggestion on making a frame. is boxboard the same as cardboard? and where can i buy these things you call "acetate sheets" and what do they look like?

thanks!! :)

Boxboard is the thinner stuff for cereal boxes, shoe boxes, etc. I like it because I find it easy to cut the edges smoothly because it's just one layer. Also, the back of a cereal box is big enough to do what you'd like in most cases. :)

Acetate sheets are often found in school supply stores - they're the clear plastic overhead sheets, I think they're 8 1/2" x 11", they're somewhat brittle and can be creased. I've also used clear plastic sections from packaging for some kids' toys. There's plastic envelope-things to hold standard sheets of paper - I bet a single-ply would do well too.

Depending on what you use for the clear plastic window, it might even be possible to use write-on, wipe-off markers to spruce up the picture a bit, temporarily, without damaging the photo underneath. :)
