hair wraps

hullo. i was just wondering if anyone has any links for making hair wraps out of embroidery thread. i have been googling, but i really haven't found too much on making them. my little sister has been pestering me for several years to do one for her (and with summmertime coming up, she is doing so again) i prefer to make one that is attached to her hair, but is there a way to attach them so that it doesn't have to be cut out?

Yes! You can make hair wraps without having to cut the hair off when you're done! Basically, take long pieces of embroidery floss/thread/whatever you're using, and put them together. Tie them around a small section of hair maybe 1/4" from the scalp, so that the knot is in the middle of the threads. Don't tie the knot too tight. Take all the threads and group them with the hair, then pull one single thread out. Wrap it around the hair and other threads for about 1", then group the threads with the hair again and pull a different thread out - start wrapping with that. Wrap tightly, go slowly, and vary the sizes of the swrapped chunks (don't make them all 1"). When you get close to the end of the hair, knot one of the threads tightly around the hair and the other threads. Trim the other threads so they're even with the hair. When you want to take it out, just carefully take the end knot out *you can carefully cut it if needed), and unwrap all the threads. The knot at the top should slip out.

I'll see if I can find some better instructions for you. :)

get enough thread t hat is about three times the length of her hair, maybe more to be safe.

braid it into her hair so that the extra length parts sticks out at the top. to make sure you don't have to cut her hair, make the braid longer than her hair with the actual threads.

then begin to wrap it around the hair. alternate colors to give patterns. you'll notice some colors run out faster, so make up for it.

if you braided the thread past the end of her hair, continue to wrap all the way down to the end of that braid and tie it off.

when she wants it taken out, you just snip the extra bottom part and can unwrap it and then unbraid it.

:D

If worse comes to worse and you can't find directions online, there is a Klutz book that not only gives you directions and ideas, it gives you the yarn to do it with too .. its 14.95 and you can get it at http://klutz.com/

Yepyep. I found alot of good reviews for that book. Michael's often sells Klutz books - you can try looking to see if they have it there. And if you get the Sunday ads with the 40% or 50% off one item coupon, you might be able to use the coupon on the book.

thank you for all the information. another question: is this actual wrapping, or are there knots involved?

the basic one is just wrapping... but if you wanna get fancy like I do... you can do a spiral staircase... (yes I'm talking about the spiral staircase pattern from doing friendship bracelts) but be forewarned that will take a very looooooong time...
