Hanging an Indoor Clothesline

9:03 am - 01/28/2004
I'd like to string up a "clothesline" (out of twine or clear fishing line - or whatever you'd suggest) to hang up some artwork (mostly 8.5 x 11 or 9 x 12 paper) with clothespins.

Problem is I'm in a rental and I'm moving at the end of the summer so I don't want to gouge the walls in a big way (a small hole that i could easily patch would be okay). So drilling into the wall or a butterfly bolt are out of the question. I'm concerned that a tack won't be strong enough to hold up the clothesline.

does anyone have any suggestions on other ways to hang a clothes line?

thanks much!

You could try tying it to the tops of blinds, stringing the line from window to window or across a porch door. Or maybe find a way to anchor the line to the tops of some of your furniture.

3m makes these hooks with really strong easily-released sticky tabs. They're called "Command" hooks. And I'm really impressed with how well they held (they make them to hold different weights) and how easily they came down. Good luck!

No ideas for how to hang your stuff up, but maybe a helpful idea for when you move. If your walls are white, and they've got small holes in them, use white toothpaste as filler. Supposedly it should mask the hole without being able to tell what you've used. I haven't tried it yet, but I am going to give it a go if and when we move. (in case you can't figure out which toothpaste is still white these days, colgate is lol)

If what you're hanging is light, just use some drywall screws and wrap the twine around at each edge. Spackle or plaster (or probably toothpaste, but I haven't tried it personally) would easily fill the holes.

I'm assuming you have drywall walls. Otherwise, the sticky hooks sound good.

i hang 4x6 photos with mini clothes pins on fishing line that is attached to the wall with simple staples, and then tied in a knot around the staple
