Semi-New Crafter on the Block

9:26 pm - 03/21/2013
Hi all,
I've been doing crafts for about half a year and joined this community several months ago, but never did a proper intro. I mostly do paper crafts. However, I am blind so it's kind of hard to make cards and stuff. Most blind craffters I know do knitting or crochet, which I just started experimenting with but really isn't that rewarding I feel. Someone suggested I do collage art, but may I ask what this actually is.

I worked with my Big Shot for the second time today. It didn't go too well, but at least I got a beautiful die cut buttterfly done. I find it quite hard to remember which tools you'll need for which technique, but I guess thsi will get better with practice.

Hi!

I'm having a hard time coming up with a clear definition of collage art. To me it is layering stuff - paper, found objects, fabrics, whatever - on to a backing material that is sturdy enough to hold it.

Your blind too!?!?
OMG I'm not alone. Yay! I don't know how to help with the craft, but I thought I'd say hi..... I crotchet. And attempt to needle point on the pre stamped things.... Those don't end up very well, colors don't get matched right apparently. -giggles- I like it that way though. So hi...
And I hope you find the help you need in this community.

I think of collage as very much what the previous poster suggested.

Usually, a grouping of objects, textiles, images, words, and things all related to a theme. So if I was doing one about 'winter', I'd include pictures of snow and ice, maybe a wooly mitten, some evocotive language like 'shiver', a miniature mug, sheet music for jingle bells or frosty the snowman, cut paper snowflakes...like that. It needn't always be flat; some of the best ones I've seen were actually more like mixed media shadow boxes.

When you do art, is it more textural? Meant to be experienced through touch? The idea of a textural collage is very appealing.

Collage might be very enjoyable for you.
You use any kind of material like felt, sequins, beads, pasta, coloured paper, glass shapes, tile pieces, fabrics or anything you can think of. And stick it down with glue or similar onto a base to make a picture.

Collage is basically a picture made up of small pieces of different coloured and textured materials stuck down.
With limited sight the aspect of using textural materials might appeal to you. You could end up with what you might call a Braille painting.

Hope that helps and I'm not completely barking up the wrong tree about this. But collage is very tactile and the possibilities of materials to be used are endless. Use your imagination.

If I've confused you or you want to talk or ask any questions, please do.

I remember once making a collage of an Eskimo in a snow scene. I stuck polystyrene squares onto the scene to make an igloo and fur and cloth to make the Eskimos clothes. He even had a little nose sticking out from his hood which I cut from a piece of pink eraser.
