I'm knitting this carpet to put in my Etsy store, but... what the hell is this called? (in portuguese it's called trapilho)

That's pretty much what it's called, trapilho yarn. If you wanted an english analogue, I suppose tshirt yarn might work.

Really? Heh, because that is an actual portuguese word, meaning literally piece of rag (rag is trapo). I have to ask how you pronounce it. :D

You could always list it as trapilho and say it loosely translates as "rag yarn".

My grandmother had rugs like this in the kitchen. It reminds me of jersey cotton strips.
