Product help needed

11:15 am - 11/09/2012
I'm looking for the name of a certain product. Basically it's a thin self-adhesive colored film. I've seen it used to tint doll glasses as well as windows. I'm going crazy trying to think of what this stuff is called.

Help?

Cellophane?

Close? Maybe? It's not self-adhesive though. However it's a good alt in case what I'm thinking of doesn't actually exist. lol

Thanks!

The only other thing I can think of is contact paper.

Contact paper might be too opaque. I light to be able to shine through it. :( Not a bad idea though.

Vinyl Window Clings? I used some from this website to cover a glass door and create more privacy.

It's something to try. I might get lucky and find it locally. Thanks. :)

Back when dinosaurs still walked the earth, in the art industry we used Pantone film by Letraset, or "Letrafilm" as it was called. It was very thin, self-adhesive and came in any Pantone color you wanted. We used it as overlays for mock-ups of products and art.

Dang, I miss that stuff. I have a few pieces left over from years ago. Not sure they even make it anymore. Probably not. Dang computers.

I think that's exactly what I'm thinking of. My Dad had tons of the stuff when he did drafting (long before CAD).

And no, they don't make it anymore. Damnit. :( At least now I know I'm not crazy!

I still have some. What colors are you looking for?
morganskye 12th-Nov-2012 01:24 pm (UTC)
I need 7 colors with 4 of each. I never make things easy. :(
wolfine 16th-Nov-2012 04:15 am (UTC)
Well...not sure what I have. What colors and how big? Like I have almost an entire sheet of Pantone 145-A. It's orangy.

(sorry for the late reply!)

Thank you, but I think I'll pass. I'm going to need a lot more then planned and I need them all in the same tones. Plus I don't think my original idea will work anything.

I really appreciate the offer though. It was very kind of you. ^_^

No problem. Good luck!

Would colored vellum paper work? Or is that not opaque enough?
morganskye 9th-Nov-2012 06:49 pm (UTC)
It's not opaque enough. It's going to be in front of some LED lights that need to shine through. Thanks though. :)
faninohio 9th-Nov-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
What about these? They would work, right?
morganskye 12th-Nov-2012 01:25 pm (UTC)
Hmm quite possibly. They might even be thin enough for me to sew through (which would be AWESOME). Thanks!
missingkitsune 9th-Nov-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
what about the colored gel cells they use in photography?
morganskye 12th-Nov-2012 01:26 pm (UTC)
I considered those, but the price makes it impossible. I need 7 colors with 4 of each. :(
missingkitsune 12th-Nov-2012 02:01 pm (UTC)
ah i see. well i hope you're able to find something then. best of luck.

I am thinking of something called
"mylar"- we used to use it in art projects in the dark ages.
morganskye 12th-Nov-2012 01:28 pm (UTC)
It's certainly the right color range. How well does light show through it?
captains_healer 9th-Nov-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
Colored window tint? It varies in opaqueness and color and is self adhesive.
morganskye 12th-Nov-2012 01:29 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that's going to be my go-to in case I can't find something better. Problem is the color range I need might not be stocked locally.
mrs_tomoe 9th-Nov-2012 11:14 pm (UTC)
It's possible, if you check at a local place that does vinyl lettering for signage and so forth, that they could give/sell you scraps or something from their projects that would work for your project. Other places to ask might be car window tinters and print shops. Letrafilm may not be made anymore, but you never know which printing press might still have some left over.

If all those fail, maybe you could make your own with colored gels and double-sided adhesive sheets.
morganskye 12th-Nov-2012 01:29 pm (UTC)
I didn't even think of that. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
