Mock Turtleneck Sweater for Cats

2:53 pm - 09/02/2012
I said I wouldn't dress up my pets, but I couldn't resist. I mean really, what's cuter than a cat in a sweater? Plus, if it snows this winter my cat can keep warm and will be able to stay outside longer.

Anyhow, I found this great dusty rose colored yarn at a thrift store. I have no idea what its composition is, but I'm guessing that it's all acrylic or an acrylic blend. I got the pattern here <http://fashion.velvetkerfuffle.net/?p=738>

This is my first attempt and I did make an error. I accidentally added a couple of stitches just as I was starting the body (pattern starts at the ribbed turtle neck). The result was a dome effect which sits right at the base of the neck. On the bright side, if my cat ever develops a hunchback she can still wear her sweater!

I can imagine knitting/crocheting pet sweaters is addictive - small enough to finish quickly and look super cute when finished!!

Please don't put this on your cat when she goes outside! Cats fur is super clever and keeps them lovely and warm as long as they don't get wet - if your cat is wearing this in snow or rain, when the wool will get wet and stay wet, they won't be able to keep their body temperature regulated as easily/properly and could catch a chill. It could also get caught on trees/brambles/hedges and your cat could get trapped!

You make a decent point. I hadn't thought about that.

I asked once at the pet store about putting a jumper on my cat- and was told that it's really dangerous for the cat. </p>

Their fur is enough to keep them warm, not matter what the climate. Putting a jumper on them messes with their body's heating and cooling, and their fur will fall out, become matted and they can develop big sores under the jumper and can even cause organ failure. So whilst it looks cute, it presents a big danger for your cat.

I don't think it ever occurred to me to leave anything on my cat long enough for it to cause matting.

It's more of an issue for long haired cats.

I ran out of yarn before I could finish the stomach of Carlos' sweatervest, but our cats should be (human-hating) friends! I admire your turtleneck.

This is so cute! I especially love the color. My cat would never stand it though - whenever I try to put anything cute on her, she lays down like a rag doll and refuses to move until I take it off!

End of October you say... Hmm,I dunno if you're a Halloween person, but this Candy Corn sweater is also super cute > http://diymaven.com/2009/09/09/crochet-a-candy-corn-pet-sweater/

You are so lucky! I love black cats. If I had black cats, I would decorate my house with Halloween stuff all year round. Or I'd rotate between traditional Halloween and the X-mas/Hween hybrid from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Come to think of it I'll probably just do that anyway...
