Kitty Friendly

Despite the fact my husband and I agreed that we wouldn't be getting any pets while he's stationed overseas, he could tell I was seriously missing having a cat. So for Mother's Day, he set it up for me to adopt these two 3-year-olds.

Dolce (black) and Dior (white tabby)

I just had to show off my new babies, but because a picture wasn't necessary in order to ask my question, I thought a cut would be best. *ahem* So yeah...

My two new kitties are in need of a scratching post before they decide to take a liking to any of the furniture. I want to make something like this. However, I don't know what kind of glue to use between the layers of cardboard. It needs to be something that isn't harmful to animals in the event they want to chew on it like the cat in the picture. I'm also wanting to cover the base with hemp rope, so the glue needs to be super heavy duty to keep the rope in place. Any suggestions?

I used this method: http://www.designsponge.com/2009/01/diy-project-recycled-cardboard-kitty-pad.html
Not as cool looking as the thinkgeek one but still very popular with my 4 furmonsters.
I used gaffa tape and once it was complete I just wrapped the whole outside edge in gaffa. Then I covered the bottom with gaffa as well so that when I put a whole heap of dried catnip into the little gaps it didn't fall straight back out the bottom of it.

I had to Google gaffa to learn what it is. I haven't the slightest idea of where to get it in person, so I guess I'd have to order it.

I like the idea of dropping in cat nip. These two cats are sooo lazy (which is great because I love to snuggle)! Maybe some kitty crack will make them perk up a little when the kiddos want to play with them.

Oh sorry I'm Australian so it's probably one of those brand/language things that don't cross over. Like when Americans talk about magic eraser - we don't have that here. It might also be known as duct tape or duck tape in some countries.
I buy it at my local big box hardware store. Any sort of heavy duty/packing tape type stuff would work well. I use gaffa because it's very thick and the cats won't scratch through it.

Many wood glues are labelled as non-toxic, from Gorilla Glue to Elmer's.

If you want to go overkill, you could go make your own...

And if you want another project after that... there's always the carpet-remnant Enterprise... http://www.bitrebels.com/geek/star-trek-cat-tree-for-trekkies-with-cats/

Pet the kitties for me...I so wish I weren't allergic!

My first thought was Gorilla Glue, but because this will be made specifically for the cats to destroy, I was a little wary and wanted some other opinions.

While I always enjoy a new science project for teaching my kids, I'm afraid of the disclaimer on this one: "Unrefrigerated glue will 'spoil' after 24-48 hours. Discard the glue when it develops a spoiled milk smell." It wouldn't do for my project to smell funky. :P

Trekkie project! I don't know who would play on that more, the cats or the kids! lol It's awesome!

Will pet. Often. :D

d'awww they look so cute!

i was going to suggest hot glue for the hemp rope. and you tuck the base of it under other rope, or in a spot cut specifically for the start and end of the rope. and hide it. that is how one of my cat trees was constructed. before my lard-ass fatcat broke it.

Hot glue you say? Well golly, I have lots of that! And I would probably need to use all of it to keep the rope in place. lol

yes! just use it to secure your ends. bit of a pain that way, but then they don[t chew on it. my cats like hotglue drippings for some stupid reason. i think they are dumbtards.

Thanks for the suggestions! :)

We made one for our cat by buying a wooden post (about 70cm/I think 3ft?) tall and a flat board piece. We then wrapped carpet around both (using hammer/nails and glue to affix the carpet) and then screwed the post into the platform base. Super easy and we've even since recovered it as the carpet gave up after 8 years of use; simply unscrew the post, rip off old carpet and recover with new :)

That is, if you're interested in considering a boring/plain version. The ThinkGeek one is cute!

One suggestion: use sisal rope instead of hemp. For some reason cats are attracted to it. You can buy it at the home improvement stores.

I wrapped sisal rope around a 1x3 board and hung it from the front door knob. The cats scratched it when they wanted out. Much more recently, I made a cardboard scratcher like the first replyer, and didn't use any glue, just tape around the whole thing (I also had reallllly long pieces of cardboard from a washing machine box to work with).
In point of note, my sister bought the thinkgeek building cat scratcher, and none of her cats will use it, but they like the ones on the floor fine.
