In Search Of a Pattern

1:51 pm - 05/02/2012
I've scoured the internet and not come up with anything - I was hoping maybe someone here could help! If this type of question isn't appropriate for the community, I'm sorry and please remove my post. :)

My grandmother makes plastic canvas alphabet baby blocks from a pattern she got in the early '70s. She has made these blocks for every grandkid and is now working on the great grandkids! Everyone in the family recognizes these particular blocks. She's at an assisted living facility now, and sells the extras she finishes at a bazaar to benefit the residents with activities like arts and crafts and music.

A couple weeks ago she left the pattern out and one of the workers there cleaned up and must have accidentally thrown it away. She was so upset. I told her I'd look online and try to find a replacement pattern, but since it is from the 70's I have been having trouble. Not many out there it seems. I found one on e-crater, but the seller said the pattern sold long ago. I also contacted someone on etsy who makes the same blocks but haven't heard back from her.

I could easily get her a brand new pattern, but this particular design has sentimental value.

This is a link to the pattern I'm looking for: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/72745777/memasblocks.jpg

I know this is a long shot, but if you have this pattern and aren't using it anymore, I'd gladly compensate you for your troubles! If your google-fu is better than mine, any leads would be so appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I really have no idea as to where to find that pattern.. but ugh that sucks. :(

I am not 100% familiar with how the blocks are created, but I'm assuming it's some kind of needlepoint with plastic backing? Could you download/find/buy some generic needlepoint designs that have letters/numbers/small illustrations and use those instead of the 'real' patterns? I could be totally off base, and if so, just ignore that. :)

Long shot, but you could email that blogger and see if she ever used it or would be willing to sell it??

Oh, it's on hold.
Looking at the few pictures I've managed to find, you could probably make a new pattern by looking at the blocks she's already made. they look really simple.

Or, actually, if you can just get pictures of them I can try to draft a pattern for her. I'm not terribly busy.

I bet you could...doesn't look like there are any fancy stitches, just a plain single stitch (or whatever it's called in plastic canvas terms). All you'd need is a clear pic of all sides.

Check the final post here...someone named jan828 says she has the pattern. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/knitting/msg071345123921.html?9

This person wrote a blog post in '09 about making the blocks:

Also try looking for booklets the company sold. Sometimes they collected patterns from kits and put them together in a collection, such as baby toys.

Here is a CM pamphlet with toy patterns...the baby blocks look different, though you never know what else is included in the pamphlet:

This booklet also contains baby blocks...no pic, though, and it's sold, but at least you can try looking for it elsewhere:

Good luck to you!

I found this blog - the woman seems to have the pattern, if you scroll down you'll see it. If you contact her, she might be willing to make you a copy if she still has it. Her blog moved to this location.

Then I found the kit for sale here.

Also, there is a person who comments on this thread who says she has the directions.

I didn't take a whole lot of time reading all the details on these posts, and I don't know what dates these things were posted, so they may be dead ends.

You should be able to reverse-engineer the pattern from the many sets of blocks already in your family. I did a lot of plastic canvas needlepoint as a kid. It shouldn't be hard at all.
