Re-painted Princess Celestia

Hi all, I'm new to the community.  Nice work so far!  Since I don't have any knitting to show for my first post I'm putting up a re-painted toy I did for my brother.  I apologize if you aren't a pony fan - I know they are all over the place right now - but it was a bit of a challenge to get this paint job right.  My first attempt at doing so.

Anyways, the toy originally looked like this:
The color is wrong on this to begin with, as Celestia is supposed to be white.  I had to pry the tail and mane off to re-paint as well.

So yeah.  Celestia is now Princess Derpy Hooves.  For those who don't know, the eyes are supposed to be wrong.  Derpy is an animation accident that got turned into a character.  Took quite a few layers of paint to get the body color right (and much experimentation).  Next I have a Twilight and Applejack to turn into...well anything I want I suppose.

I've always been more of a drawer and painter than a crafter, but over the last few years my skills have taken a turn for the tangible and I've taught myself how to do beading, glass pendants, model painting and most recently - knitting.

It's a pleasure to meet fellow creative types - and I have to say what a beautiful community you have here.  I look forward to taking a more active part in the future.  I am hoping that with the addition of a place to show off creations and get some feedback I'll spur myself on to more and more creative endeavors.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Ahahaha cute! And totally not what I was expecting behind the cut. Your initial description totally made me think of this recent Sandra and Woo strip.

Ahaha, that was great! Yeah, Hasbro doesn't really know what to do with the collector/adult/Brony fans they have for MLP. Good thing there are those of us who can repaint the products. I've seen some amazing ones others have done too!

You'd think they would be more hip... Years ago a number of us adult ladies all put it to the hasbro reps, why no clothes or accessories for our 12" star wars dolls?! And no decent Amidala or other females.

They were stunned.

I can only imagine their reaction to the bronys!

I think they were surprised at first but they are starting to come around. The adult collectible market is quite large - I should know, I work in it - and the demand for "nostalgic" products is throwing a few toy companies for a loop.

From what I understand now, though, Hasbro has been working to understand and perhaps embrace the Brony phenomenon. Though I think the channel, The HUB, "gets it" more than Hasbro.

I agree with your question to Hasbro - there need to be more decent ladies in collectibles (all kinds) aimed at the women who collect, not the men. :)

Until they do, gives us geeky crafters a reason to create our own versions. ;)

Love it. My daughter is obsessed with MLP and I lost count of how many times she goes off on one about them making Celestia the wrong colour. Will show her and let you know what the resident MLP fan thinks :)

Thanks! :) I was frustrated too until I realized this was all new territory for Hasbro, and they are just a bit slow on the uptake over here.

I don't watch MLP, but this is amazing. Husband and I both laughed at Princess Derpy Hooves.

Awesome! I bought a bunch of this set on sale (I think I have like 5 sets, heh) but I can NOT pry the tail/mane off of Celestia to save my life! I've totally maimed my fingers trying :/

Seriously, it took some good old fashioned elbow grease and the dull side of a table spoon. There's a lot of glue on those suckers. I had to give up being afraid to break it and just wrench it off. The knife helped greatly with the mane.

If it's glue, might a soak in really hot water help? That's how I prise off Blythe scalps.

Need a tutorial! What kinda paint did you use?! I get almost angry looking at the wrong-colored Celestia and Luna--ESPECIALLY the purple-not-blue Luna. But I still wanna give Hasbro money for making something so awesome. = P

Also, haha Mameshiba icon.

That was the tutorial I used. As for paint, I used grey matte primer for the body (cause it was Derpy) and just regular modestly priced acrylics for the paint job. At the end I made sure to seal it with a spray clear coat.

You know Mameshiba! I'm doing my nursery in Mameshiba. :D

This looks so great! I just bought this Celestia for my daughter on her birthday, and never would of guessed your after photo as a mod job. Great work!
