wings!

Referring to my last post about what to make for a grrrl I have a crush on who likes butterflies, I got the best idea ever.

HOW DO YOU MAKE BUTTERFLY/FAERIE WINGS?

I've always wanted to make myself a pair anyway.

Any links and pictures to people selling wings, wings that have already been made, etc. that I can use as a guide are appreciated too.

You know those metal, wire coat hangers?

Make them all into straight(ish) lines by untwirling the wire..etc then bend them into wing shape, using either 2 or 4 coat hangers depending on desired affect, put tights over them, use a bit of ribbon in the center & maybe fake flowers. then paint! and stick sequins on..whatever yer want!

they're easy to make. my pal emily (sourmix) and i made a set last summer. we used four wire coat hangers and two sets of panty hose and some tulle some (to tie it to our backs). we painted the wings with water colors and glued silk flowers in the back where we tied all four hangers together.

I've had a pair specially made for me. They actually are fairly simple to craft yourself. You need to use chicken wire, cut into the shape of wings. You cover them with a sheet of white cotton batton, the same kind you put inside comforters. You can usually buy packages of white feathers in bulk at craft stores. They can be a bit expensive. I think the lady who made my wings purchased hers at walmart. You'll have to hot glue each and every single feather onto the wings. You'll need to use some very stiff white cardboard to link the two wings together in the back. Make sure the wings are fastened well to the cardboard. You can loop pieces of fabric over the card board back piece and slip your arms in (like back pack straps) to hold them on your back. Perhaps some time I'll get a picture take of me with the wings on....I don't know if I have any old pics around..I'll look...
